The University of California-Santa Cruz, nicknamed "Oh Wow! U" after it was founded in 1965, will no longer be issuing "narrative evaluations" in lieu of letter grades. After a recent vote by the faculty, A-F letter grading will be required in the 2001 fall semester.
TC President Arthur Levine said that many other institutions have abandoned narrative evaluations, in large part because prospective employers and professional postgrad schools dismissed them.
The article, entitled "Oh Wow! U Has Left the Sixties" appeared in the December 17, 1999 edition of the US News and World Report.
