The Writing Skills Center
The Center:
The Writing Skills Center is an on-campus tutorial service located in the basement of Horace Mann, Room 46. The Center's mission is to assist students in academic writing, including term papers and dissertations. In addition, the Center assists students with specific writing tasks and helps students develop writing strategies they can continue to use in their professional lives. The Writing Skills Center is an educational service open to all members of the TC community, and all TC students benefit from a special subsidized rate. Other interested persons, including Columbia University students, may also use the service and should telephone the Center to make special arrangements.
The Tutors:
The programs in Applied Linguistics/TESOL and English Education jointly recruit masters and doctoral students to serve as tutors. Tutors have relevant academic and teaching experience and are comfortable working with both native and non-native speakers of English pursuing a variety of degrees. In addition, the tutors are versed in the APA style of formatting and documenting research papers. Students who come to the Center will be able to work individually with one of these Writing Center tutors and receive individual attention and instruction to develop competence and confidence in writing.

Tutoring can take place anytime and anywhere convenient to both students and tutors. The Center also has three private tutoring rooms located in the Center for the convenience of tutors and students.
