"Both presidential candidates have said that too many public schools in America are failing. We agree. There is not only an educational, but a moral imperative to take immediate action," wrote eight high ranking academic officials, including President Arthur Levine, in an editorial that appeared on election day.

They write that the national conversation about vouchers, charter schools, and shutting down and revamping failing schools is "rooted more in ideology than fact." They add, "Liberals decry vouchers as undermining public education, and conservatives hail them as the solution to public-school failure."

"Research," they write, "has shown each of these remedies has its own strengths and weaknesses. None is a magic bullet for dealing with failing schools." They urge president-elect to "act now" and move beyond ideological divides, conduct extensive experiments with each of the reforms proposed and evaluate each rigorously.
