Terry Orr Associate Professor of Education says, " camps that have some direct or indirect strategies to reinforce what students have learned are very beneficial. Having students in an alternative setting also gives them more motivation and stimulates their learning."

With school out for the summer, Citywide, the public school system is paying for 10,000 students to attend literacy classes and related camps this summer through its growing Break-Aways program. This program coordinated through the American Camping Association, provides kids with a daily minimum of three hours of literacy instruction. Campers catch up on the work that they didn't master during the school year and immerse themselves in subjects they love.
