Teachers College held its first Deaf Awareness Week the week of October 22nd and featured three days of events that highlighted the language, community and culture of deaf people. The events were sponsored by The Office of Diversity and Community and The Committee for Community and Diversity (CCD).

A film, In the Land of the Deaf, portrayed the lives and reflections of French adults and children who are deaf in activities at school and home and among friends. Afterwards, a panel of deaf students at TC discussed their own experiences.

In It is Funny to be Deaf…Sometimes, Adrian Blue (pictured), a nationally known deaf professional performer who has worked with several national theatres of the deaf, gave a tragic-comedic performance of his experiences of being deaf. He gave his performance in American Sign Language and voice interpretation was provided.

Students from the Program in the Teaching of American Sign Language as a Foreign Language at Teachers College, offered classes in basic American Sign Language to members of the TC community.
