Experts Join Together To Improve Teachers' Ability to Diagnose Children's Understanding of Arithmetic Skills
The National Science Foundation recently awarded a 2 year, $460,000 grant to a collaboration between Dr. Herbert Ginsburg, the EDC Center for Children and Technology, and Wireless Generation. The grant provides for research to study the ways children solve arithmetic problems and to help teachers correct "unsuccessful strategies" known as 'bugs." The goal of the research is to create a new mathematics assessment tool that will be available from Wireless Generation.
Dr. Ginsburg is an international expert on mathematics assessment whose interests include the development of mathematical thinking in young children. Wireless Generation is a pioneer in creating observational assessment tools for use on hand-held computers. The final product will incorporate work on observational assessments and mathematics teaching and learning to help teachers identify students' problems in mathematics and correct these "bugs."
