TC/NYU Conference Honors Educator Phillip Jackson
To honor a career in education spanning more than 40 years, Teachers College and the Steinhardt School of Education at NYU collaborated to convene a special conference in honor of Philip W. Jackson. A renowned educator, Jackson is the David Lee Shillinglaw Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus in the Departments of Education and Psychology at the University of Chicago where he has been a member of the faculty since 1955.
To honor a career in education spanning more than 40 years, Teachers College and the Steinhardt School of Education at NYU collaborated to convene a special conference in honor of Philip W. Jackson. A renowned educator, Jackson is the David Lee Shillinglaw Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus in the Departments of Education and Psychology at the University of Chicago where he has been a member of the faculty since 1955.
Entitled, "Images of Teaching for the 21st Century," the conference was convened over two days, with one day at each school. Greetings were provided both by TC President Arthur Levine and Steinhardt Dean Mary Brabeck. Speakers paying tribute to Jackson and his work included Linda Darling Hammond, the Ducommun Professor of Education at Stanford; Lee Schulman, President of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Testing; Ellen Condliffe Lagemann, Dean of the Harvard Graduate School of Education; Maxine Greene, William F. Russell Professor in the Foundations of Education (Emerita) at TC, and many others, including a panel of Jackson's former students. They all spoke of Jackson's pioneering and highly influential scholarship, while also providing insights and images about the practice of teaching.
A TC alumni, Jackson received his Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology in 1955 and was also a Fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences. Jackson has held many offices and written several books including John Dewey and the Philosopher's Task, and Untaught Lessons, a well-known book based on the Sachs Lectures he delivered at TC in the early 1990s. In his long and distinguished career, Jackson has taught as a visiting faculty member at Teachers College, Harvard University, Queens College and New York University. At the University of Chicago he served as Chair of the Department of Education and Dean of the Graduate School of Education, among other appointments.
The conference organizers David Hansen, Professor of Philosophy and Education at TC, and Professors Rene Arcilla and Mary Driscoll from Steinhardt are planning a book based on the presentations.
