Margaret Crocco, an associate professor of social studies, said achievement problems from which some girls may suffer can send the wrong message.  "When girls--or boys--don't see girls achieving, they'll take a lesson from that," Crocco said. "The lesson will be that girls are less capable, and that's not a good lesson for girls to have about other girls, or for boys to have about girls." 

Crocco also said there are very real achievement problems for boys, who are more likely to have learning disabilities and who drop out of school in larger numbers.
