Arthur Zankel, Vice Chairman of Teachers College's Board of Trustees, passed away in July. Zankel, who was 73, joined the Board in 2001, and initially chaired the Committee on Trustees and served on the Executive and Investment Committees. He supported the TC Education Partnership Zone, which seeks to boost achievement among disadvantaged schoolchildren in the neighborhood, personally underwriting the TC Reading Buddies, a program in which TC students read daily with children at four local schools.
Zankel was co-managing partner of First Manhattan Company and managing partner of High Rise Capital Management L.P. He also oversaw the Carnegie Hall endowment fund and made a $10 million donation that led to the construction of the new Judy and Arthur Zankel Hall.
In a message to the Teachers College community, President Arthur Levine described Zankel as "someone whose tough-mindedness and impatience with anything not genuine only enhanced his passion for making a difference in the world and improving the lives of others. His passing is a profound loss to all who were touched by his enthusiasm and generosity."
