Columbia University Alum Receives National Award on Behalf of Disabled Children
Frederick Weintraub, former Teachers College, Columbia University student and current Independent Monitor, Chanda Smith Modified Consent Decree, recently received the Council for Exceptional Children's (CEC's) J.E. Wallace Wallin Lifetime Achievement in Special Education. Through his work, Weintraub has transformed the spectrum of educational opportunities and services for children and youth with exceptionalities and elevated the profession of special education.
Weintraub's leadership was pivotal in developing the concepts, court orders, and legislation that established the Education for All Handicapped Children Act, now known as the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Weintraub also played a significant role in designing and securing enactment of the Gifted and Talented Children Education Assistance Act, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and Preschool and Early Intervention Services.
