Coalition of Essential Schools Announces Spring 2006 Recipients of Theodore R. Sizer Dissertation Scholars Award

Two doctoral students have been selected as the spring 2006 recipients of the Theodore R. Sizer Dissertation Scholars Award. Presented by the Coalition of Essential Schools (CES), the Sizer Dissertation Scholar Awards encourage a new generation of scholars to conduct research on CES schools and further an understanding of the effectiveness of innovative school practices. Award recipients receive a grant to conduct research or complete their dissertation, as well as a stipend to present their research at the CES annual conference. Teachers College Columbia University student Maria Hantzopolous was one of those selected.

"For over 20 years, CES has had a lasting impact on school transformation efforts, sitting at the nexus between theory and practice," said CES executive board member Jacqueline Ancess, co-director of the National Center for Restructuring Education, Schools, and Teaching at Columbia University's Teachers College. "In the selection of these scholars, we honor the contribution of Ted Sizer to American education."
