Comic Strip Project Draws Students In
"Hurricane Helpers" was a slam-dunk in the Comic Book Project for three Scranton Elementary boys.
Eighth-graders Oscar Nunez and Frankie Torres and sixth-grader Pedro Rodriguez created the comic about mismatched basketball players in a high-stakes tournament. Teammates Strechguy, Dark Master, Bullet, Animal and Beast battle for $3,000 they vowed to donate to Hurricane Katrina victims. "Hurricane Helpers" is one of the four strips selected for the Comic Book Project's 2006 Cleveland publication; there were 653 submissions from across the district.
This is the Cleveland public schools' third year in the nationwide project, created in 2001 for New York City youths by Michael Bitz of Teachers College at Columbia University. Today, 11 districts from Philadelphia to St. Louis participate.
