Deputy Schools Chancellor Farina to Welcome Top Principals Into Teachers College Fellowship Program
NYC DOE Deputy Chancellor Carmen Farina Joins New Cohort of 22 Cahn Fellow Principals at Teachers College Reception April 27th
NEW YORK, NY, April 25, 2006-'"Twenty-two of New York City's most distinguished public school principals have been accepted into the 2006 Cahn Fellows Program for Distinguished Principals at Teachers College, Columbia
University. The new Cahn fellows will be joined by Carmen Farina, Deputy Chancellor of the New York City Department of Education, and several regional superintendents at a reception on April 27th from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m. Representatives of the media are invited to attend.
The new fellows -- the fourth such group of distinguished principals to enter the program -- also will hear a panel discussion by four 2005 fellows, NYC public school principals Judy Tarlo, Sandye Johnson, Benjamin Basile, and Carelton Gordon.
The Cahn Fellows Program seeks to improve the city school system by-as funder and long-time TC friend Charles Cahn puts it- "recognizing, stimulating and further educating high-performing principals."
"Our approach is to encourage a culture of learning in the fellowship where all principals acknowledge that they have something of value to contribute and something of value to learn," says J. Kirsten Busch, the program's founding
director. "This has allowed principals to confront their leadership challenges with their peers while forging a sense of community in the process."
During their 15 months of participation in the program, the Cahn Fellows are organized into four working study groups to address leadership challenges they face in their schools. The Fellows also participate in an intensive two-week Summer Leadership Institute at Teachers College that includes a trip to the Civil War battlefield in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, to discuss how its history and the military strategies employed there relate to their profession.
To date, 114 New York City principals have completed the Cahn Fellows Program, including 57 Cahn Fellows and 57 first- and secondyear principals (known as Cahn Allies) who have been mentored by the Fellows. Collectively, past and current Cahn Fellows and Allies serve more than 130,000 elementary, middle and high school students in the five boroughs. As part of the program, which also seeks to improve the educational system for all the city's students, the Cahn Fellows meet periodically with New York City Schools Chancellor Joel Klein. The 2006 Cahn Fellows collectively serve more
than 20,000 students across New York City. On average, they have been principals for six years.
