NEW YORK STATE'S DUAL CRISES: LOW GRADUATION RATES & RISING SCHOOL TAXES
The State of New York's failure to adequately fund public schools is a major cause of the low graduation rates plaguing schools across the state, according to a new report by the Alliance for Quality Education (AQE) and the Public Policy Education Fund (PPEF). The report also found that shortfalls in state aid are forcing local taxpayers to bear an unusually high burden to cover the costs. The report affirms the common sense understanding that money matters in providing children meaningful opportunities in the classroom. Specifically, districts in New York State that graduate 90 percent of their students spend an average of $5,000 more per pupil than districts that graduate less than 50 percent of their students.
