Fulfilling America's Promise for Blacks
Tavis Smiley, activist and talk show host of "The Tavis Smiley Show," a weekly two-hour talk show on public radio, is the author of the new book "The Covenant With Black America." Tavis is quoted as saying, "This Covenant is a road map toward a plan of action to address the primary concerns of Black America today: from health to housing, from crime to criminal justice, from education to economic parity."
The following is an excerpt from an essay by Edmund W. Gordon, Ed.D., director of the Institute for Urban and Minority Education at Teachers College, Columbia University that is featured in "The Covenant With Black America."
"Our job, in working to achieve fairness and equity, is to sound the alarm about the unjust criminal justice system and demand that our leaders and those in power act now to halt this destructive, unfair treatment of our brothers and sisters, especially of our children."
