Deborah kenny

Deborah Kenny chosen for Oprah's "2010 O Power List"
Deborah Kenny, a mother of three and former teacher, sank her life savings into creating a revolutionary charter school. Harlem Village Academy opened in 2003 with two fifth-grade classes and has since grown into three schools with more than 700 children who are beating the odds. For her accomplishments she was featured within the pages of O, The Oprah Magazine and interviewed by Bill Cosby. Watch the full interview here.

Carter stewart

Carter Stewart Appointed United States Attorney
President Barack Obama nominated and Senate appointed Carter M. Stewart as United States Attorney for the Southern District of Ohio. Prior to his appointment, Mr. Stewart worked in the Columbus office of Vorys, Sater, Seymour and Pease LLP, where he focused on the areas of criminal defense, commercial litigation, antitrust, and education law. Elaine Heffner is a psychotherapist and parent educator in private practice in New York City, and a Senior Lecturer of Education in Psychiatry at Weill Cornell Medical College. For twenty five years she was a Co-founder, Director and Program Supervisor of the Nursery School Treatment Center at Payne Whitney Clinic, New York Hospital. Currently, as part of her professional practice, Dr. Heffner is a consultant to the Diller-Quaile School of Music. Her practice also includes consultation with other nursery schools as well as with individual parents.

Welcome to the December edition of the TC Alumni Newsletter.

Are you intererested in serving your fellow TC alumni?
There's still time! TC alumni are represented officially by the Alumni Association's Council, a board of 35 members elected to serve three-year terms. If you are interested in becoming a council member or know someone who would be an asset to the council, please download a nomination form. Deadline to submit nominations is December 31, the selection process will take place during the first quarter of 2011, and appointments will be made in May.

Are you an international alumnus?
Be sure to keep your contact information up to date. If you are currently living abroad and would like to help connect alumni in your country back to TC, we are in need of your help as an International Alumni Network (IAN) Country Representative. For more information and to see the current active country reps, visit the IAN site.

What is in store for Higher Education?

In the midst of this country's "race to the top," it is clear that there is a need for superior, well-rounded learning institutions and well-trained educators and administrators, as well as well-informed policymakers. The research and education ongoing at Teachers College, Columbia University and the work of our alumni will continue to make an impact, both nation- and world-wide, upholding the long-standing legacy created by the founding thinkers and doers.
