Keith Frome, a TC Philosophy and Education alumnus (Ed.D., 1994), is quick to recognize how the material he studied and techniques he acquired while at TC are woven into the work he does today. Alumna receives 2011 Charlotte W. Newcombe Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship

Chelsey Kivland, has been awarded a 2011 Charlotte W. Newcombe Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship. The Newcombe Fellowship is the nation's largest award for Ph.D. candidates in the humanities and social sciences addressing questions of ethical and religious values. Each 2011 Newcombe Fellow will receive a 12-month award of $25,000. Kivland is now a doctoral candidate in anthropology at the University of Chicago. Her dissertation, "We Make the State": The Performance of Political Action in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, examines the role expressive political action plays in constituting "the state" as an ethical ideal in Port-au-Prince.

TC is Proposing to Open New Public Elementary School

Associate Vice President Nancy Streim announces that Teachers College and the New York City Department of Education are preparing to open a new public elementary school for children living in Community School District 5. EAT: The Effortless Weight Loss Solution by Dr. Ian K. Smith

Ian K. Smith, M.D., the 2011 President's Medal of Excellence recipient, is currently a medical contributor to ABC's nationally syndicated, "The View", a medical columnist for Men's Health magazine, and the medical/diet expert on VH1's "Celebrity Fit Club." Dr. Smith is also the host of the nationally syndicated radio show Healthwise on American Urban Radio Networks. Dr. Smith was the keynote speaker at Academic Festival 2011 on April 16.

NYC Green Cart Cookbook
published by Laurie M. Tisch Illumination Fund

Laurie M. Tisch, TC Trustee and founder of the Illumination Fund, recently unveiled a cookbook, which features healthy recipes using ingredients found on NYC Green Carts. Twenty-six recipes were donated by renowned chefs, New York City institutions, initiative partners and Green Cart vendors.

Learn to Live Well: Bringing Education to the Table
Academic Festival 2011 was a huge success! If you attended you know the day was filled with insightful and inspiring sessions led by some of our most incredible TC faculty, staff, trustees, alumni and students. On April 16th, students, alumni, guests and TC community members took part in the various activities on campus. Additionally, the day was planned in conjunction with TC Admitted Student Weekend.

Dennis Walcott, New York City's new public schools chancellor, spoke during the Kossoff Lecture on Education and Policy. He pledged civility in the debate around school reform, and he pledged to work with teachers and principals, the United Federation of Teachers, and parents, to engage in honest discussion and meaningful reform.

During our Distinguished Alumni Award Luncheon, the Alumni Association recognized Samuel Peabody '59, Violeta Petroska-Beshka '83, Diane Ravitch '75, Ruth Ch'rist Sullivan 53 and Samuel Totten '82. Paul O'Neill '01, received the Early Career Award.

The day also featured a keynote address by Dr. Ian K. Smith '93, national expert on health and nutrition and this year's recipient of the President's Medal of Excellence. Janna Spark '79, Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society, was awarded the President's Award of High Distinction. TC in Asia: Working Together - Hong Kong
President Susan Fuhrman and Edith Shih, Host Committee Chair and TC Trustee, are proud to present TC in Asia: Working Together - a global conference on education in Hong Kong on May 28. The line up of speakers will include TC Faculty: Thomas James, Dean and Provost; Tom Corcoran, Co-Director of the Consortium for Policy Research in Education; ZhaoHong Han, Associate Professor of Language and Education; Xiaodong D. You are invited to attend the second annual TC COLA: Idea Café, which will take place at the Columbia University Club. Instead of walking in to see chairs and a podium, you will see flip charts around the Prospect Lounge, each containing an idea and an alumni facilitator standing close by. After networking and sharing wine and light fare, we will begin the Idea Café. Attendees will then be invited to walk up to a flip chart and start a conversation around that idea. Rather than play the role of the expert, our facilitators will pose open-ended questions so that everyone can engage around the topic. TC COLA's values, brainstormed early on, are Inspiration, Education and Connection. This event is about putting a greater emphasis on connecting. For alumni and guests only.

In Washington, DC, we have heard a lot about how difficult it is to fire bad teachers. But what about retaining the good ones? Come hear this panel of experts discuss the following: 1) What the data shows with respect to retaining excellent teachers; 2) How to define what an excellent teacher is; and 3) What role, if any, should the Federal government play in keeping excellent teachers?
