A Book Talk and Signing by Dr. Claude Steele, Provost of Columbia University and Professor of Psychology
Claude Steele is the twenty-first Provost of Columbia University, as well as a Professor of Psychology. He offers a vivid first-person account of the research that supports his groundbreaking conclusions on stereotypes and identity. He sheds new light on American social phenomena from racial and gender gaps in test scores to the belief in the superior athletic prowess of black men, and lays out a plan for mitigating these "stereotype threats" and reshaping American identities. He is an elected member of the National Academy of Sciences; the National Academy of Education; the American Philosophical Society; and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Dr. Steele previously served as Director of Stanford University's Center for Advanced Studies in the Behavioral Sciences. This book talk is co-sponsored by the TC Office of the Provost, the Higher and Postsecondary Education Program, Gottesman Libraries, and the Black Student Network. A reception and book signing will follow Dr. Steele's talk.

How can families encourage their children’s language and social development while also supporting their children to acquire a home language(s) alongside English? The Rita Gold Early Childhood Center (RGC) serves the Teachers College and Columbia University communities through its on-site early care and education program for young children and their affiliated families. In addition to outreach and research purposes, the center also provides professional preparation for Teachers College graduate students. The RGC is committed to supporting its families by cultivating children’s language development and respect for cultural and linguistic diversity.

The “Discovering Your Leadership Strengths” Summit is a series of workshops aimed at helping TC students learn how to lead effectively across their varying roles and contexts. It will focus on building leadership capacity in a multifaceted manner by utilizing several methods: lecture and discussion with leadership experts, leadership assessment tools, reflective practice, group coaching, and networking opportunities. The sessions are intended to highlight specific leadership qualities, attitudes and behaviors that can be immediately applied to one’s professional and personal life.
