Music Festival
The Luzerne Chamber Music Festival - "With an International Flair" - featured alumna and Fulbright scholar, Cynthia Elise Tobey on piano, along with the Luzerne Chamber Players. A native of Rhinebeck, Tobey made her orchestral debut at age 14, studied six years at The Juilliard School, was accepted to The Curtis Institute of Music before pursuing her master's at TC. Wit and Whimsy in Connecticut
Wit & Whimsy, Art in Public Places produced by Stamford Downtown and the City of Stamford will feature sculptures on loan to the City of Stamford by 12 sculptors. Alumna Judith Peck is among these sculptors. Shown below are three of her works: Seated Woman Red, Tennis Player and Personalities.

These spectacular works of art will line the sidewalks and parks of the downtown as well as the Stamford Town Center. Wit & Whimsy runs through August. For more on Wit and Wimsy visit Stamford's site here.

New York City Department of Education Teacher Recruitment 2011-2012

The deadline for the NYC Department of Education's online teacher application has been extended. The new deadline for applying is Friday, July 29, 2011. Restrictions are in place for hiring new, external teachers for the 2011-12 school year, with exceptions for the following subject/certification areas: Special Education, Biology/General science (Middle School Only), Earth Science, Chemistry and Physics, Speech, ESL, Bilingual licenses, Latin, and Chinese. Additionally, new schools in their first, second, or third year of operation that are still phasing in may hire up to 40% new, external teachers. (this excludes Common Branches and early childhood). Strengthing TC's Relationships in Asia
In early June, a delegation from TC that included President Susan Fuhrman, Provost Tom James and several faculty members traveled to Taipei, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Beijing, meeting with alumni and prospective students. The trip included a full-day education conference in Hong Kong and culminated in the announcement of a new John Dewey Scholarship that will enable TC to enroll future generations of education scholars and leaders from Asia, regardless of means.

The Hong Kong conference, titled "Working Together," brought together education leaders from several Asian countries to talk about shared education needs and goals. Chaired by Edith Shih, TC Trustee and General Counsel of the Hong Kong-based company Hutchinson Whampoa, and envisioned by Fuhrman, the event included presentations by Khunying Sumonta Promboon, a Distinguished Member of Thailand's Commission on Higher Education and chairperson of the country's National Sub-Committee on S&T Manpower Development, and Ren Youqun Vice President for Financing and Logistics at East China Normal University, and associate professor in the Department of Curriculum and Institution. Art & Art Education: Children's Art
Art & Art Education is in the process of reorganizing some of their studios and classrooms and they have found a box full of children's marker drawings that we are hoping to identify. The collection will be stored until September 1, 2011 after which it will be disposed of if it is not claimed.

Grace Dodge Society Celebrates 10th Anniversary
On June 22 over 100 alumni, friends, trustees, faculty and staff met to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of TC's Grace Dodge Society.

Created by TC's Board of Trustees in 2001, the Grace Dodge Society is the College's formal recognition society which honors those folks who have notified TC that the College is a part of their estate plans.

Annually in June, TC honors these members of the Grace Dodge Society at a luncheon held at the University Club. It is a wonderful event and a great opportunity for our alumni to visit with friends and reconnect with colleagues.

Fall 2011/Spring 2012 - Bilingual Extension Institute (BEI)
The Chinese teacher education program -- Certificate Program in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (TCSOL) -- provides state-of-the-art training in Chinese pedagogy that sets trainees on a fast and efficient track to gain knowledge and skills necessary for operating effectively in the current and future classrooms in various contexts. Making a Way by Ulysses Byas (co-authored by Dr. Marilyn Robinson)

Byas was the first black school superintendent in the southeast and he, along with co-author Robinson, chronicle his journey in this memoir. He is also a recipient of the 2010 President's Medal of Excellence. To read more about this TC alumnus, click here.




How's My Kid Doing?: Practical Answers to Questions About Your Child's Education by Keith Frome

Frome is quick to recognize how the material he studied and techniques he acquired while at TC are woven into the work he does today. He is the head of the King Center Charter Middle School in Buffalo, New York and co-founder of one of the largest college access providers for low-income youth, College Summit.
