TC Nursing Education Student Receives Award
TC Nursing Education student June M. Como, who is also Lecturer of Nursing at the College of Staten Island, has received the Clinical Nurse Specialist of the Year award from the National Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists (NACNS). The award recognizes NACNS members for their outstanding professional achievements as Clinical Nurse Specialist Educators.
Como’s doctoral work focuses on health literacy, medication adherence and health outcomes in patients with heart failure.
“Teaching is an important component of my life,” said Como. “Being able to guide my graduate students toward their practice as CNSs in Advanced-Practice Nursing, assisting them in providing the highest level of evidenced-based patient-focused care, and implementing system-level changes in their respective health care settings is wonderfully fulfilling.”
Como was officially recognized in early March at the NACNS annual awards luncheon oin Baltimore.
Mariana Souto-Manning Honored for Scholarly Contributions
In February, the American Educational Research Association (AERA) announced that Mariana Souto-Manning, TC Associate Professor of Education in the Department of Curriculum and Teaching, is the recipient of AERA’s 2011 Division K Innovations in Research on Diversity in Teacher Education Award. Souto-Manning is being honored for two recent books: Freire, Teaching and Learning: Culture Circles Across Contexts (Peter Lang, 2010) and Teachers Act Up! Creating Multicultural Learning Communities Through Theatre (TC Press, 2010), co-authored with Melissa Cahnmann-Taylor.
AERA Division K Vice President Etta Hollins praised Souto-Manning’s work as “exemplary innovations in research on diversity.”
Souto-Manning will be honored in April, in New Orleans, during AERA’s Annual meeting.
Michael Rebell appointed to U.S. Equity and Excellence Commission
Michael Rebell, TC Professor of Education Law and Adjunct Professor at Columbia Law School, was one of 28 education advocates, civil rights leaders, scholars, lawyers and corporate leaders appointed by U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan to the Department of Education's Equity and Excellence Commission. The commission will examine the impact of school finance on educational opportunity and recommend ways school finance can be improved to increase equity and achievement.
Rebell is Executive Director of TC’s Campaign for Educational Equity. Previously, he was lead counsel for plaintiffs in New York State’s long-running school finance suit.
