Honoring Alumni Hannah and Harold Scholl for Their Generosity
After working here in what is now TC’s Mysak Clinic for Communications Disorders, Hannah -- who passed away in 2007 -- went on to co-author several widely admired books, including Comparisons of Voice Between Young College Women and Their Mothers; Speech and Language Faults of Schizophrenic Children; and Children With Conduct Disorders. She served as Professor of Speech Pathology and Linguistics at East Stroudsburg State College in Pennsylvania, and was a member of the Association for Psychoanalytic Medicine.
Harold is a former special education professor who authored A Study of the Speech Therapy Services at St. Barnabas Hospital for Chronic Diseases. He went on to co-found, in 1977, Independent Child Study Teams Incorporated, a New Jersey-based company that offered remedial and special education tutoring in non-public schools. The venture was so successful that it expanded nationally under a new name, Educational Inroads, and was ultimately acquired by Sylvan Learning Systems in 1997.
Now, with generous gifts totaling $100,000, Harold Scholl has created the Harold M. Scholl Endowed Scholarship to support speech and language pathology students, and has provided discretionary support for the work of TC’s Mysak Clinic for Communications Disorders.
These gifts build on a previous gift that created the Hannah Holzman Scholl Scholarship.
In recognition of the Scholls’ generosity and dedication to TC, the College recently dedicated the Harold and Hannah Scholl Student Workroom in the Mysak Clinic.
“At Teachers College, we like to talk about what we call the continuous feedback loop – the interplay between our own teaching and research, and the input we receive from our alumni doing cutting edge work out in the field,” said TC President Susan Fuhrman at the dedication ceremony, which was attended by Harold Scholl. “Hannah Scholl, and Harold Scholl exemplify what Teachers College alumni are all about. Clearly the Scholls were standard-bearers for Teachers College in every way. But their legacy here at Teachers College extends much further. We at TC are honored and blessed to partner with the Scholls and to be part of their legacy.”
