Dishing Dirt

Organic lunch and conversation with TC Professor Emerita Joan Dye Gussow (EdD '75) and heirloom seed expert Amy Goldman (MA '78). Gussow, hailed by The New York Times as "matriarch of the eat-locally-think-globally food movement,” and Goldman, renowned author of The Heirloom Tomato: Garden to Table, who has been described as "perhaps the world's premier vegetable gardener" by the President of the New York Botanical Garden. Topics of conversation ranged from benevolent soil fungi to biodiversity and the future of the planet. The setting was Gussow’s garden on the banks of the Hudson River, an hour north of New York City. Dim Sum Warriors

What happens when you mix delicious Chinese delicacies with sensational Chinese martial arts adventures? An educational iPad app. TC alumna Yen Yen Woo (EdD '04), along with her husband, designed ‘Dim Sum Warriors’ a bilingual digital comic book series about kung fu-fighting Chinese snacks. The series, which is colorfully illustrated and narrated in English and Mandarin Chinese, can aid readers in learning Chinese and English. Read More >>

A Bronze Medal for TC's Maya Lawrence and the U.S. Women's Epee Team

The U.S. women's epee team is taking home a bronze medal after beating the Russian squad on August 4th. The United States team of TC alumna Maya Lawrence (MA '06) and the sisters Courtney and Kelley Hurley edged Russia 31-30 in extra time to take bronze for its first fencing medal of these Olympics.The U.S. women previously beat number 5 Italy in a quarterfinal match in which Lawrence went a combined 15-11 in her three bouts. Exclusive Film Screenings in California: Sept. 6 & 8

TC Office of Alumni Relations and The Maxine Greene Society are hosting exclusive film screenings of the documentary "Wham! Bam! Islam!" in California. Produced by TC alumnus Naif Al-Mutawa (MA '00), the film chronicles the various challenges he faced leading up to the creation of his comic book series THE 99 - which features a team of superheroes, each exemplifying one of the 99 virtues of Allah. For more information on the documentary, please visit whambamislam.com. Guests will engage in a A&A with Naif Al-Mutawa and filmmaker Isaac Solotaroff (whose mother is a TC alumna). Less Than One Month to Nominate a Distinguished Alum
The Alumni Association is seeking nominations for the Distinguished Alumni & Early Career Awards - the highest honor bestowed on TC Alumni by the Alumni Association. We invite you to nominate TC graduates who have distinguished themselves in their fields and have earned high respect among their colleagues and the general community, and whose impact is felt on a national or international level. Recent graduates who have graduated within the past 10 years, have earned distinction in their field, and who demonstrate further future potential will be honored with the Early Career Award. Do you know an alumnus or alumna who meets these criteria? Nominate him or her today! Nominations are due by September 1, 2012.

September 19: Beyond the Schoolhouse Doors: Bringing Non-School Factors into Education Policy
What would a national education policy look like that mobilized all government agencies and policy tools rather than just schools alone? The editors of three ground-breaking volumes about the role of school and non-school factors in education (Greg Duncan and Richard Murnane, eds., “Whither Opportunity? Rising Inequality, Schools, and Children's Life Chances”; Richard Kahlenberg, ed. The Future of School Integration and William Tate, ed. Research on Schools, Neighborhoods, and Communities) review the latest research and join in a panel discussion of its implications for education policy for the coming decade.

This month’s guest is Marcus Robinson, Chancellor and CEO of EdPower in Indianapolis, IN. As CEO of EdPower, Marcus Robinson isresponsible for guiding its many school-based initiatives. September 28-29 - Language and Social Interaction (LANSI) Working Group
Sponsored by the TESOL and Applied Linguistics Programs at Teachers College, Columbia University, LANSI brings together like-minded colleagues in the larger metropolitan area of New York who work with audio/video-recorded data from naturally occurring interaction. Through their regularly held data sessions, LANSI offers a forum in which participants continue to build their analytical repertoire via mutual engagement over time. In so doing, they also experiment with an apprenticeship model where graduate students work alongside practicing analysts making observations and providing accounts for those observations "empirically and precisely".
