TC Alumna Receives Book Award

Dr. Tomoko Takahashi (EdD '84) has been named the Winner of the 2012 Next Generation Indie Book Award in the Autobiography category for her memoir entitled Samurai and Cotton: A Story of Two Life Journeys in Japan and America, published in November 2011. The book has been honored as an Award-Winning Finalist in the Autobiography/Memoir category of the 2012 International Book Awards.

The Art of Affirmation

In both her art and philanthropic work, Pamela Ader (MA '65) focuses on the power of nature – including the human will. Pam Aders’s multimedia art has often evoked the serenity of nature. A recent exhibit at the Phoenix Gallery in New York City, for example, was collectively titled “Celestial,” and titles of the individual pieces included “Daybreak,” “Cloud Cover,” and “Milky Way.” For followers of Ader, that made her 2007 show “Containment” all the more startling. Reflecting Ader’s bout with breast cancer, the work in that show was an affirmation of the individual’s ability to surmount past difficulties. Read the full story here.

A Golden Apple for the Teacher

Bryan Jackson (MA ’04) has received the Golden Apple Excellence in Teaching Award and has been recognized as one of the best teachers in the Chicago area.  Bryan is a third grade teacher at Latin School of Chicago.  Read the full story here.

Samurai And Cotton: A Story of Two Life Journeys in Japan and America by Tomoko Takahashi (EdD ’84). Takahashi was born in Japan; at twenty, she left her home for the United States. She currently serves as the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Soka University of America in Aliso Viejo, California—she is also the Dean of the Graduate School as well as Professor of Linguistics and Education.

Hearts On Fire: Twelve Stories of Today’s Visionaries Igniting Idealism into Action by Jill Iscol (EdD '77) (written with TC faculty member Peter Cookson). Iscol, an educator and activist, is President of the IF Hummingbird Foundation, a family foundation established in 1989 to support domestic and international efforts to strengthen democracy. She is a member of TC's President's Advisory Council.

Mirrors of the Mind: Introduction to Mindful Ways of Thinking Educationby Noriyuki Inoue (PhD '03). Inoue is an Associate Professor of Educational Psychology at the University of San Diego.

Tisch Illumination Fund, follows immigrant street vendors who are rolling fresh fruits and vegetables into poorer neighborhoods of New York where finding a fresh red ripe apple can be a serious challenge. Join us from 3:00 - 5:30 p.m. at Milbank Chapel.

June 5 - Provost Series featuring Karen Froud
Please join Thomas James for the second installment of the 2012 Provost's Series - a discussion and cocktail reception featuring Dr. Karen Froud, Director of the Neurocognition of Language Lab, and Associate Professor of Speech-Language Pathology and Neuroscience and Education at TC. She will be speaking on the topic: "Neuroscience of Language and Learning." Learn about her ongoing research in the field of Biobehavioral Science. Karen's use of brain-imaging technologies is helping to decipher what is happening "behind the scenes" to determine learning and behavior as they develop in children with speech disorders, adults learning to read, people who speak multiple languages, and even long-time practitioners of meditation.

June 30 - TESOL Certificate Program Professional Development Workshop - Global Business English
Global Business English is more than memos and business documents. Students need a variety of skills, ranging from casual conversation over a business lunch to representing a company’s position in more formal settings. Since there are many kinds of Business English courses and most Business English teachers are de facto course designers, this workshop covers how to do a learner needs analysis to make informed decisions on materials, how to adapt materials for Business learners, and classic situations and problem-solving in the English for Specific Purposes (ESP) classroom. No previous teaching experience required. Workshop cost: $150.

Join national leaders in education law to discuss critical issues of education law, policy, and practice. Topics to be covered include charter schools; Race to the Top, NCLB, using student test scores to evaluate teachers; harassment and bullying; serving students with disabilities and English language learners; testing for tracking, promotion, and graduation; search and seizure; cyber-bullying and free-speech rights of students and teachers; and fiscal equity. September 28-29 - Language and Social Interaction Working Group
Sponsored by the TESOL and Applied Linguistics Programs at Teachers College, Columbia University, LANSI brings together like-minded colleagues in the larger metropolitan area of New York who work with audio/video-recorded data from naturally occurring interaction. Through their regularly held data sessions, LANSI offers a forum in which participants continue to build their analytical repertoire via mutual engagement over time. In so doing, they also experiment with an apprenticeship model where graduate students work alongside practicing analysts making observations and providing accounts for those observations "empirically and precisely".
