Reyes — Senior Executive Assistant in TC's President's Office and a master's degree student at the College in Higher Education — recalls how reading "Death of a Salesman" in an English class at TC-affiliated Heritage School changed his life. Reyes, who grew up in a tough neighborhood in the Bronx where most of his friends never finished high school, credits his years at Heritage School in East Harlem with helping to turn his life around. The Heritage School, which accords the arts equal parity in its curriculum, reflects the vision of TC Trustee Joyce Berger Cowin, and was founded with her generous support by TC faculty member Judith Burton.
In an interview with NPR's Claudio Sanchez, Reyes also ponders whether his own success is proof that the system works or the exception that illustrates the need for broadscale change.
