Karen Billings (EdD '86), VP for the Education Division of the Software & Information Industry Association (SIIA), was inducted into the Association of Educational Publishers (AEP) Hall of Fame. The educational publishing industry's highest individual honor, the AEP Hall of Fame recognizes those who have dedicated their careers to the advancement of educational resources and the industry that develops and supports them. Billings has nearly tripled the number of educational company members at SIIA in past 10 years. She founded the Innovation Incubator program and the One-to-One Business Profiles program, and has doubled attendance at signature education technology events. Liz Griffiths (MA '08) and her business partner, Trevor LeVieux, are passionate about promoting the arts in education. Together the founded Building Blocks Media, a San Diego-based educational technology company who has just released their first iPad app for kids. The app is called Musical Paint. As the name suggests, Musical Paint features innovative technology that allows children to paint music. Liz says, "Kids aren't going to learn if they aren't engaged. In Science magazine, Rutgers’ Ravit Duncan and TC’s Ann Rivet (above) review radical proposed changes to K-12 science curricula.
Two education professors and experts on how children learn science have endorsed radical proposed changes in the nation’s K-12 science education standards. In an essay in the January 25 edition of Science, Ravit Duncan, an associate professor of science education at Rutgers’ Graduate School of Education; and Ann Rivet, an associate professor of science education at Teachers College, Columbia University, call on scientists to get behind proposed new standards and advocate for their adoption by the states. With TC's year-long 125th Anniversary celebration now officially underway, the TC Fund is excited to share these great opportunities with our alumni and friends, whose support each year make it possible for our students to transform lives and to positively impact the world in which they live.

Provide a $5,000 Scholarship with a $2,500 Gift: TC Trustees will match, dollar-for dollar, your gift of $2,500 to provide a one-year $5,000 Annual Fund Scholarship to a student with demonstrated need. Divine Fate by Audrey Insoft (MA '92). Insoft earned an associate’s degree in journalism, a bachelor’s degree in business administration, and a master’s degree in adult education and instructional design. She worked in the insurance industry for twenty-five years in marketing, training, and communications. She lives with her husband and son in Westchester County, New York.

Neither World Polity nor Local or National Societies by Tavis Jules (EdD '08). Jules is an Assistant Professor in the field of Cultural and Educational Policy Studies at Loyola University Chicago. His research focuses on educational policy formation and development - particularly, but not exclusively, within the Caribbean. More recently, his research has focused on analyzing the impact of regionalization upon small (and micro) states.

Happy Birthday, TC!

The lobby of TC's Zankel Hall tends to be crowded at five o'clock on Thursday evenings, but the scene last week was on a different order of magnitude. This was no mere crush of students heading for evening class. Teachers College was kicking off the year-long celebration of its 125th birthday, and there was a party going on -- and on, and on. In fact, when the official bash, billed as "The Happy Three Hours," concluded at around 8:00 pm, the die-hards adjourned to the cafeteria for more. The Laurie M. Tisch Illumination Fund is Bringing Policy to the Table: New Food Strategies for a Healthier Society
The Laurie M. Tisch Illumination Fund will launch theLaurie M. Tisch Center for Food, Education & Policy and the Laurie M. Tisch Illumination Fund's Healthy Food & Community Change Initiative with a special forum at Teachers College, Columbia University: "Bringing Policy to the Table: New Food Strategies for a Healthier Society." The conference will focus on ways to develop evidence-based programs and policies that encourage healthier diets and lifestyles while making healthy foods accessible and affordable to underserved communities. Dr. Edward G. Verlander (MA '80, EdD '86), chairman of Verlander, Wang, & Co., will discuss his new book, The Practice of Professional Consulting: The Journey of the Trusted Consultant (Jossey Bass, 2012). A must-read for new and aspiring consultants, as well as instructors of training programs on consulting -- the "world's newest profession" --, Verlander's work shows how change is the essence of consulting and organizations must change to thrive. He examines processes, tools, skills, and best practices, as he offers a new model with assessments to show what is needed to become and flourish as a truly trusted consultant. Our fifth annual signature homecoming event will anchor the 125th anniversary celebration on campus. Breakout Sessions will explore some of the many trailblazing "firsts" that constitute the College's legacy as well as the work that continues to shape its future.


The 2013 President's Medal will be presented to Ellen Condliffe Lagemann '78, a former TC faculty member and 2002 Distinguished Alumni Award recipient, who will also be featured in our Keynote Address.
