Reconnect & Follow TC Online

Erin Leider-Pariser (MA '88) recently lead a group though The Spanish Camino de Santiago (The Way of St James) - one of the most ancient walking routes in the world. People take this pilgrimage for many different reasons - from spiritual to sport. Read more about this incredible experience here.

Srdjan Stakic (EdD '05) premiered his first feature film based on the Pulitzer Prize nominated play, Yellow Face, by David Henry Hwang. Stakic executive produced the film for YouTube (the first YouTube funded feature film) together with Justin Lin (director of Fast & Furious franchise). The film won the audience award at the LA Asian Pacific Film Festival. The film is about the racial relations in the US, and specifically about the practice of "yellow face" in the entertainment industry.

"As Director of Alumni Relations, it was my great pleasure to represent Teachers College at the 50th anniversary of Kyoto Computer Gakuin and the 10th anniversary of the Kyoto College of Graduate Studies for Informatics in Japan this June. TC Alumnus, Wataru Hasegawa (ME ’99), President and Chairman of the Board and professor at KCGI presided over the formal ceremony, which took place in the Main Hall of the Kyoto International Conference Center, which seats over 1800 people -- yet still wasn’t large enough to hold all of the supporters and some students watched the ceremony on a live simulcast from an overflow space. Extraordinary Gift of Support
An $8 million gift from education philanthropists Camilla and George Smith will enable Teachers college to renovate the fourth floor of its Gottesman Libraries as the Camilla and George Smith Learning Theater. The new facility will support the next generation of faculty and student research and instruction and ensure that TC remains home to the world's preeminent library in the field of education. As we enter July and all the celebrations (and well deserved vacations!) that this month affords many, the TC Fund would like to remind you that there are only two months left to make your 2013 Annual Fund gifts. Although TC's 125th Anniversary celebration runs until December 31, the Annual Fund's fiscal year ends on August 31. That means, for your gift to count as a 2013 contribution, it needs to be received on our records no later than August 31.

Mary Ann Cappiello (EdD '05) recently co-wrote a book titled "Teaching with Text Sets". In addition she is the co-authors a blog called "The Classroom Bookshelf" and contributor to Uncommon Corps, a group using digital media to share their passion for and knowledge of nonfiction literature and their experience with children, teachers, and librarians.

Maia Bloomfield Cucchiara (MA '98) recently wrote a book titled "Marketing Schools, Marketing Cities". Cucchiara is assistant professor of urban education in the College of Education at Temple University.

Global TC Day
The Teachers College Community will celebrate Global TC Day on (and around) July 25 with multiple, events all around the world, both formal and informal, hosted by regional TC alumni. Register today!

New locations are being added every single day so be sure to check back on www.tc.edu/125/globalday often. In addition to areas with planned events, we have created opportunities around the globe for PrintClickShare (PCS) meet-ups. We want you to print one of the already created signs (or get creative and make your own), take a picture at the suggested location (click!) and share your photo with the TC Community by using #GlobalTCDay and #TC125. Can't make it to any of our events or PCS meeting points? No problem. We still want to know what you're doing wherever you may be. Join national leaders in education law to discuss critical issues of law, policy, and practice. We will cover a range of topics including charter schools, standardized testing, serving English language learners and students with disabilities, and free-speech rights of students and teachers. Among our renowned presenters are John King Jr. (New York State Commissioner of Education), Gary Orfield and Patricia Gandara (Co-Directors of the UCLA Civil Rights Project/Proyecto Derechos Civiles), Rhoda Schneider (General Counsel for the Massachusetts Department of Education), and Jay P. Heubert (Teachers College Professor of Law and Education).

July 9 - August 9 - Art Cognition Laboratory in conjunction with Macy Gallery
The Art Cognition Laboratory is happy to announce its first collaborative project that will take place in the Macy Gallery. Developed in conjunction with Judith Burton, Ed.D and the Art Education Summer InStep program in co-ordination with Dennis Oppenheim Studio, the project seeks to stimulate a dynamic dialogue between students and the Tooth & Nail: Film and Video 1970-1974 works by Dennis Oppenheim . A cohort of experts from the fields of psychology, education, performance art, cognition science and behavioral studies, will mediate the process of disassembly and reconstruction by which abstract concepts such as personal risk, emotional intelligence, transference and transformation, embedded in the works are investigated.
Time: Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, 2:00-5:00pm, have been conceptualized as open classroom sessions.
Location: Macy Gallery, Teachers College

The TC-in-DC Regional group will be meeting for Jazz in the Sculpture Garden at the National Gallery of Art. Be there as Bruno Nasta and U.S. Naval Academy will play. The group will meet in the grass near the "Chair Transformation" Sculpture (left) (number 11 on the map here). October 18 - 19 - Fall Seminar: "On the Future of Anthropology in Schools of Education"
The Programs in Applied Anthropology and Anthropology and Education at Teachers College, Columbia University are organizing a small conference bringing together faculty, alumni and graduate students to discuss the current challenges facing their field ranging from theoretical, methodological and analytical angles in an effort to continue exploring the productive tensions found at the intersection of Anthropology and Education. October 18 - 19 - Language and Social Interaction Working Group (LANSI)
LANSI brings together scholars and students working on naturally-occurring data within the broad area of language and social interaction. In keeping with the LANSI spirit of diversity and dialog, we welcome abstracts from colleagues working on a variety of topics using discourse analytic approaches that include but are not limited to conversation analysis, interactional sociolinguistics, linguistic anthropology, and critical discourse analysis. October 19 - Advanced Organizational Development: Guiding Organizations through Permanent Whitewater
Classic approaches to change management were designed over fifty years ago to manage one change at a time, in a linear fashion. In case you missed it, that's not the world we live in today. Even John Kotter, author of one of the most widely used change models in existence, says that it's time to throw our old-fashioned linear models out the window. What we need is an approach to change that lets us deal with multiple changes simultaneously, on a continuous basis. November 12 - 125th Anniversary Celebration
The Gala celebration will be held on November 12, 2013 at the legendary Apollo Theater in Harlem and we are expecting a packed house. As part of the program, we will be honoring leaders in several sectors related to education including: Laurie M. Tisch for her philanthropy and leadership, Jeffrey Immelt for his and GE's corporate support and exemplary impact on the next generation of learners, and James P. Comer as one of the giants of school reform who has stressed the psychosocial development of children. All proceeds from the Gala will benefit TC's scholarship fund.
