Professor Zhou Huimei's presentation: the institutional analysis of changes of the mass education museum in Republic of China
On the February 3 of 2014, Zhou Huimei, a visiting scholar from Beijing Normal University's Faculty of Education, gave a presentation on the changes of mass education museum in Republic of China.
"Mass education museum (MEM)" refers to the comprehensive institutions of the mass education movement from 1929 to 1949. Other related terms for this research include mass school, common people’s education and popular education. The purpose of “MEM” was to reform the common people and to promote nationalism in modern China. As introduced by Professor Zhou, it served as a main way to provide literacy training for adults and children (who had not attended school) during the period of Republic of China.
In this presentation, she introduced mass education museum’s major development force: mandatory from the government. She further presented a rich set of old pictures and some statistics to show how MEM works. For example, livehood education, political education, health education and entertainment education composed the domains of mass education. The MEMs had an uneven spatial layout across the country and within province. Finally, regarding the impact of mandatory institutional arrangements, she summarized the pros and cons of it.
