"In Defense of Food" - a new curriculum and media partnership!
The Laurie M. Tisch Center for Food, Education & Policy is excited to announce our new partnership with Kikim Media to develop a curriculum to correspond with their documentary In Defense of Food, based on Michael Pollan’s book of the same name.
The curriculum, developed by the Tisch Food Center, will be designed for use in afterschool programs or other informal settings for middle school aged children (grades 6-8). After watching a 5-10 minute clip of the documentary, interactive learning activities will highlight and reinforce the key concepts of the clip. The program will be designed to give students the skills and motivation they need to make healthier choices in their own lives, for themselves and the environment, using the best evidence for effective change.
Kikim Media is a production company that aims to tell stories that make a difference. Kikim Media draws on more than 35 years of experience to use the latest technologies to engage, entertain and inform audiences.
The Tisch Food Center, housed in the Program in Nutrition at Teachers College Columbia University, cultivates research about connections between a just, sustainable food system and healthy eating and translates it into recommendations and resources for educators, policy makers, and community advocates, with a focus on schools as critical levers for learning and social change. For more information about the Center, visit www.tc.edu/tisch.
In Defense of Food is set to premier on PBS in 2015, along with the accompanying curriculum.
Funding for this project has been provided by the National Science Foundation and by PBS.
