Janet L. Miller, Professor of English Education, will receive the Mary Anne Raywid Award of theSociety of Professors of Education (SPE) on April 18, 2015, during the American Educational Research Association (AERA) annual conference. Established in 1996 to recognize “individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the study of education,” the award is named after Mary Anne Raywid (1928-2010), who presided over SPE in 1978-9 and was Professor Emerita at Hofstra University.

In a written statement, William H. Schubert, SPE Chair of Awards Committee and Professor Emeritus, University of Illinois at Chicago, said:

"Professor Miller’s publications, consultation, and teaching have provided theoretical and practical acknowledgment of the contributions of women in education and a basis for building upon insights and experiences of teachers. Her work has opened doors for new generations of scholars who are increasingly aware of the intersections among gender, class, race, and identity with teaching and curriculum….It is for this outstanding work and more that we have chosen to recognize and award" Professor Janet L. Miller.

Miller is the author of numerous journal articles and book chapters that focus on intersections of curriculum, feminist and qualitative research theories, especially as these inform and disrupt constructions of curriculum as well as teacher and researcher subjectives. For her “sustained achievement in education in education research,” she was elected a Fellow of the AERA in 2010. She was also honored with AERA’s Division B – Curriculum Studies Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008.

Miller is the first Teachers College recipient of the Raywid Award since Professor Emerita Maxine Greene was honored by SPE with the inaugural award. SPE was founded in 1902 by Charles DeGarmo and John Dewey. Originally called the Society of College Teachers of Education, it is the oldest scholarly education organization in the United States.
