Summer Immersion!
A 6-week program will prepare new international students for TC
This summer will mark the launch of the new six-week Teachers College Academic Immersion Seminar, designed for newly admitted international students interested in accelerating their introduction to the rigors of graduate studies and academic life at TC.

“We are so excited about this new program,” says Tom Rock, Vice Provost for Enrollment Services at TC. “There has been a need for a program like this for quite some time and there was nothing structured quite like this currently offered at the College. The Academic Immersion Seminar is the best way for new students to accelerate their studies at Teachers College. Our aim is to set these incoming international students up for success from Day One.”
More than 25 percent of the recent entering classes are citizens from outside the United States. “We needed to find alternative ways to support this large cohort of incoming students, many of whom are in the United States for the very first time,” Rock says. This new program, with support from Provost Tom James and the TESOL program at TC, is a collaborative effort between the Offices of International Affairs, International Services, and Enrollment Services. Newly admitted international students can self-select this Summer B program.
Participants will hone their academic preparedness for the start of the fall term, and will receive mentorship through the fall semester from a current TC student. The Immersion Seminar, which runs during our Summer B 2016 term from July 6-August 16, 2016,also offers an extended introduction to the TC community and New York City, including the opportunity to settle into campus housing or find off-campus accommodations.
The Immersion Seminar is a 2-point course for credit. Participating students participating must complete all assignments and attendance parameters to successfully pass the course. Topics addressed include:
- An introduction to Teachers College
- Oral classroom skills
- APA style guidelines
- Engaging with faculty
- Academic writing tips
- Presentation skills
