Henig: With New Authority Under ESSA, States Need "Coherent Vision" for Role of Public Education

In an interview with Education Week, TC's Jeff Henig, Professor of Political Science and Education in the Department of Education Policy and Social Analysis, says states assuming new policy authority under the federal Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) need "a political culture and alignment of political interests that support a relatively coherent vision of what the role of public education will be in promoting the well-being of the state." ESSA, which takes effect next fall, requires states to submit policy plans to the federal Department of Education. Who has final say over K-12 education policy varies from state to state, depending on their constitutions, and "skirmishes are breaking out in several states over who's in charge," Education Week reports.
