Lighter Notes: Music at the 2016 State of the College Meeting
Musical performances by members of the TC community have become something of a tradition at State of the College meetings during the Susan Fuhrman era. This year, the tradition was invoked to pay tribute to the President herself, as TC Student Senate President (and Music & Music Education doctoral student) Drew Coles led members of the Senate and the TC Community Choir in a rousing knockoff of The Major General’s Song from the Gilbert & Sullivan Operetta “The Pirates of Penzance.” Nicole Becker accompanied on piano.
A sampling:
She’s shaken every hand that is manicured and squeezable
And passed among great wealth to gather funds wherever feasible
Where the Future Comes First is the largest fundraising campaign
To have brought fourth more than two hundred million bucks in Dewey’s aims
The premier female in her post, she aims to increase diversity
She works so hard for students near and far worldwide and locally
Though outside Teachers College awful rhetoric is prevalent
She raises higher standards as the Teachers College President
Later, TC Music & Music Education master’s degree student Larrolyn Patterson Parms-Ford sang the gospel song “I Shall Wear a Crown,” accompanied by Kristian Douglas on piano, Dustin Kaufman on bass and Tyreek Jackson on drums and with vocal backing from students from the Columbia University Gospel Choir.
