Pressure and Criticism From Adults Linked to Depression in Teens, TC Study Showed
An article in The Boston Globe references previous research by Suniya Luthar, Foundation Professor of Psychology at the Arizona State University and Professor Emerita of Psychology at Teachers College, which showed that pressure and criticism from adults is linked to depression, anxiety and maladaptive behaviors in middle and high school kids, particularly those from affluent families. Parents aren’t the only source of these pressures, the researchers noted; coaches and other school faculty may also set hard-to-meet standards.
