Dear Members of the TC Community:

Over the past several weeks, many of us in our community reflected, rejoiced and welcomed new beginnings during the holidays of Passover, Holi, and Easter. I would like to conclude this week by extending warm wishes to our Muslim students, colleagues, alumni, and friends as they prepare for the holy month of Ramadan, which begins at sunset on Monday, April 12, and ends at sunset on Wednesday, May 12.

Ramadan is a festive time of gatherings with family and friends. As has been the case with other holidays over the past year, I recognize that celebrations may continue to be more subdued than usual this year. I hope, however, that those observing Ramadan will be able to come together in meaningful and fulfilling ways. And as Provost Rowley shared in her note to faculty and students last week, Columbia Muslim Life is offering online programming for Ramadan throughout the month.

Ramadan is a time both for deep spiritual devotion and reflection on the responsibility that we have to one another, to our communities, and to those in need. These principles bind us all together, and I continue to be inspired (and sustained) by the ways in which our TC community – students, faculty, staff, alumni, and all of our partners whom we serve – model the diverse, equitable, inclusive and just society that we are striving to build.

In that spirit, I wish everyone a restful weekend. And, to our Muslim family and friends, I wish you a Ramadan Mubarak.
