Dear Members of the TC Community:

I am writing to share tragic news. As some of you may have already learned, on Thursday night, Davide Giri, a Ph.D. student in Columbia’s School of Engineering and Applied Science, was murdered in a violent attack near campus. Davide was assaulted while walking in the vicinity of 123rd and Amsterdam Avenue. The criminal investigation is ongoing and police have a suspect in custody.

This is a devastating event. Nothing challenges our sense of a rational universe than the sudden and senseless murder of a young person. Remember that we are here to help. If you need support, there are services and resources available to students through TC’s Office of Student Health and Wellness and, for full-time employees, via the Employee Assistance program. Students can also access resources through Columbia Health and pastoral counseling at the Office of the University Chaplain.

Having such a shocking crime take place just steps from the Columbia campus is also deeply disruptive to our sense of trust and personal safety. Visit our Office of Public Safety for available services; in emergencies or if you feel threatened, call 212.678.3333.

It is painful to imagine the suffering of Davide’s family and friends this morning. I know that all of you join me in sending them our heartfelt condolences.

Warmly,

Tom Bailey Signature
