Dear Members of the TC Community,

As many of you know, this past Sunday, January 9th, residents of 331 East 181st Street in the Tremont section of the Bronx experienced the deadliest apartment fire in recent NYC history. This tragedy took the lives of 17 people, injured dozens and displaced many families. The devastating news comes during an already traumatic time as society continues to struggle with the realities of the global health pandemic. We mourn the loss of life and send our sincere condolences to those who lost friends, family and loved ones.

In TC fashion, many community members have expressed a desire to come together to support the victims. As details unfold and we learn what needs are imminent, we will communicate them to you. Additionally, as we have in the past, we are organizing a TC Relief Effort and will share details next week.

In the meantime, there are several local community organizations and NYC offices accepting donations. We share the below links for informational purposes only and are not endorsing the listed organizations.

Additionally, we are reminding our community members that there are TC/Columbia resources available to you:

  • Office of Student Health and Wellness (Students)

The team of Student Support & Counseling is part of the Office of Student Health & Wellness in the Division of Student Affairs and provides students with a central point for wellness support and resources at Teachers College.

  • Columbia University Counseling and Psychological Services (CCPS)

Students with CU medical insurance may make counseling appointments at CCPS.

  • Self-Care Support and Benefits (Staff and Faculty)

Resources to support your mental and physical wellbeing.

Thank you for your concern and commitment to helping those most in need.

Warmly,

Janice S. Robinson, Esq.
