President Thomas Bailey joined Columbia University President Minouche Shafik, Barnard President Laura Rosenbury, and New York City Council member Shaun Abreu on the Manhattanville Campus on Sept. 20 to rally Morningside Heights and West Harlem friends and neighbors, along with Teachers College community members, for the third day of the Great Broadway Sweep.

The event garnered support for collaborative work to promote equity, sustainability, and opportunity in the surrounding neighborhoods.

“We are all united in ensuring that our environment is safe and clean, and we hold ourselves accountable to you for that,” President Bailey said, noting that the clean-up effort exemplifies TC’s commitment and the vision of our Center for Sustainable Futures.

“Our participation in this event, as three institutions linked by this storied avenue, represents the deep pride we all feel in our city and our commitment to the prosperity and wellbeing of its citizens," shared President Shafik. 

President Shafik added that Columbia's hope is to reach net zero emissions by 2050. "Our participation in this event today represents the pride that we feel as part of this city," she shared. "And it’s also part of our commitment to sustainability and the environment."

The Great Broadway Sweep is a five-day effort to collect trash along New York City's most iconic street, Broadway, and was organized by two of the City’s nonprofits, Sanitation Foundation and We Love NYC.
