GRAE 2018

Graduate Research in Art Education

Conference
2018

October 26-27, 2018
Teachers College, Columbia University
525 West 120th Street
New York, NY 10027

On behalf of the Art and Art Education Program at Teachers College, Columbia University, a warm welcome to the 14th annual GRAE conference. We are pleased to be hosting doctoral student presenters and faculty advisors from Pennsylvania State University, Ohio State University, and Teachers College, and we celebrate the homecoming of our TC art education doctoral alumni serving as conference respondents. The 14th annual GRAE conference will be held in the Smith Learning Theatre at Teachers College, Columbia University. The Smith Learning Theater, located on the fourth floor of the Gottesman Libraries, provides an experimental environment that can be configured and curated to support a diverse range of learning, teaching, and research activities.

This year’s GRAE presenters take up such issues as power and control over meaning in children’s artwork, student agency in relation to media, material culture and performance, transforming pedagogies, positioning identities, and ethics and education in and as art practice. The questions raised in the dissertations both reflect and intensify the vibrancy of current research in the field. Just as importantly, this doctoral research—as a collection—expands the contexts in which focused inquiry in art education is now taking hold. This is a welcome move.

Director and Professor, Mary Hafeli
