Evaluating the relationships between naming accuracy, circumlocution, and connected speech production in people with chronic aphasia

This project aims to evaluate the relationship between successful target retrieval and circumlocution attempts during a naming assessment with connected speech informativeness during two different connected speech tasks. Conceptually, this study is a partial replication of prior work (Tilton-Bolowsky et al., 2023). We predict that the original findings will be reproduced in this study, which will lend further evidence of a meaningful relationship between circumlocution and connected speech. Projected completion date: May 2025.

Measuring changes in circumlocution content before and after Semantic Feature Analysis + Metacognitive Strategy Training treatment

This project will examine changes in circumlocution content in four people with chronic aphasia before and after they participated in 24 sessions of Semantic Feature Analysis + Metacognitive Strategy Training (SFA+MST; Tilton-Bolowsky et al., 2023) treatment. We are interested in measuring whether the four participants produced greater numbers of category, action/function, physical property, location, and association features following the treatment. The SFA+MST treatment protocol included elements that were directly aimed at increasing people with aphasias’ explicit productions of these features in moments of word-finding difficulty.
