As a complement to the Summer Institute, this course will explore the ways in which children’s literature serves a powerful cultural artifact that can be read to mediate conversations about important topics in our society. We will take an in-depth look at culturally diverse literature with a specific focus on race, exploring how children’s literature can function as a tool to develop racial literacy, cultural competence, and critical consciousness.
