Kindergarten Transition Participation and Experiences among Culturally Diverse Families of Children with Developmental Disabilities

This project, funded by the Irving Institute for Clinical and Translational Research at the Columbia Medical Center, is a collaboration between Dr. Jahromi and her community partners in East Harlem, the Association to Benefit Children (ABC).  The study uses a Community Based Participatory Research (CBPR) approach to examine key stakeholders’ perspectives on socio-contextual risk and protective factors that inform under-resourced and under-served families’ experiences during their child's transition to kindergarten special education.

Self-Regulatory Processes in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder

This project is focused on examining self-regulatory processes, such as emotion regulation coping strategies, executive function, and effortful control, in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).  We aim to better understand the role that self-regulatory processes play in explaining the heterogeneity in ASD.  We are also exploring how self-regulation promotes aspects of school readiness and success for young students with disabilities, including their academic performance, classroom engagement, and prosocial behaviors with peers.

Social-Emotional Development in Adolescent Mother-Child Dyads

This federally-funded longitudinal study, a collaboration between Dr. Jahromi and her colleagues at Harvard Graduate School of Education (Dr. Adriana Umana-Taylor) and Arizona State University (Dr. Kimberly Updegraff), examines the developmental outcomes of children of adolescent mothers who face socio-contextual risk factors that may be related to developmental delays in intellectual, language, and social-emotional functioning.  We are studying factors (e.g., mother-child interactions, family functioning, and the broader social context) that influence these children's development from infancy into until kindegarten entry.  Our goal is to identify the mechanisms that promote positive developmental outcomes in this population of children (NICHD R01 HD061376).

Intervention to Support Parents of Children with ASD and other Developmental Delays

This project is a collaboration between Dr. Jahromi and her colleagues at Teachers College.  The interdisciplinary team brings developmental, clinical, and behavioral expertise to test the feasibility and acceptability of a telehealth implementation of the Incredible Years Parenting Program® designed for parents of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder and Language Delay (ASLD). The program aims to support parents’ psychosocial wellbeing and coping while also strengthening their knowledge and skills to facilitate their children’s emotion regulation and language development, and strategies to respond to behavioral challenges.
