My research focuses on the learning of motor skill and attitudes in physical education and methods for completing research in field settings, such as schools.  I also write extensively about research methods and research preparation in the the social sciences.

 Stephen Silverman is professor of education and senior advisor to the provost for resesearch preparation at Teachers College, Columbia University.  He received the B.S. degree from TempleUniversity in 1976, the M.S. degree from Washington State University in 1978, and the Ed. D. degree from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst in 1982.  He previously held faculty positions at LouisianaStateUniversity, The University of Texas at Austin, and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Professor Silverman’s research focuses on teaching and learning (motor skill and attitude) in physical education and on the methods for conducting research in field settings.  He has made over 200 presentations to international, national, and regional groups and has published over 125 chapters and papers, including more than 80 refereed research articles.  He is the co-author of 18 books related to teaching and research methods including Proposals that Work: A Guide to Planning Dissertations and Grant Proposals (6th ed., 2014, Sage), Student Learning in Physical Education: Applying Research to Enhance Instruction (2nd ed., 2003, Human Kinetics), Reading and Understanding Research (3rd ed., 2010, Sage), and Research Methods in Physical Activity (7th ed., 2015, Human Kinetics).  Dr. Silverman has been a reviewer for numerous journals in kinesiology, physical education, and education and served as editor of the Journal of Teaching in Physical Education and the Research Works column of the Journal of Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.  From 2002-2005 he served as editor-in-chief of the Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport.  He has been a member of the editorial boards of Measurement in Physical Education and Exercise Science, Journal of Teaching in Physical Education, International Journal of Physical Education, Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport, and Quest

Professor Silverman has delivered a number of prestigious lectures including the 2011 American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD) Alliance Scholar Lecture, the 2002 Raymond A. Weiss Distinguished Lecture (AAHPERD), the 2000 AAHPERD Eastern District Scholar Lecture, the 1993 American Educational Research Association (AERA) Physical Education Scholar Lecture, and the 1992 AAHPERD Research Consortium Scholar Lecture. He was recipient of the first Exemplary Research Paper Award presented by the AERA Special Interest Group Research in Learning and Instruction in Physical Education.  In 1999 was recognized by the University of Massachusetts at Amherst as an outstanding alumnus for his contributions to educational research and in 2010 was inducted into The University of Texas at Austin Kinesiology and Health Education Hall of Honor.  He has received both the Curriculum and Instruction Academy Honor Award from the National Association of Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) and the Distinguished Service Award from the AAHPERD Research Consortium. In addition, he was the recipient of the 2008 NASPE Presidential Award. 

Professor Silverman is a past chair of the NASPE Curriculum and Instruction Academy and served as co-chair of the Physical Activity and Physical Education Expert Panel of the American Academy of Pediatrics.  He served on the Spencer Foundation task force developing guidelines for the preparation of educational researchers.  He previously served as national chair of Health and Safety Services for the American Red Cross and was a member of the Physical Education Standards Committee of the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards.  Dr. Silverman is a Fellow in the AAHPERD Research Consortium and an Active Fellow in the National Academy of Kinesiology and is a past-president of both organizations. In 2010 he was named an AERA Fellow.
