Art and Art Education

Intro

The Gottesman Libraries is committed to developing its holdings of books and other resources that support the Teachers College program in Art and Art Education, while implementing recent book displays in the Offit Gallery through the continuing generosity of The Myers Foundations.  We are unique among select institutions (Northwestern University,  University of North Dakota, and University of West Virginia) that receive annual funding from the Myers Foundations; we are the only sole graduate school, as well as the only one with a program in art and art education -- a field that allows us to specialize in our collecting efforts and art-related initiatives that also embrace art conservation, exhibition support, and commissioned art.

A Little More Background

Colonel Eugene E. Myers was a decorated war veteran, museum administrator and philanthropist. During World War II, he served in the Pacific and was later appointed Chief of Protocol and Chief of the Air Force Presentation Support Division based at the Pentagon. He received his master’s degree from Teachers College in drawing, painting and graphics in 1947, and was an instructor at the College from 1940 to 1941.

He retired from the Air Force as a colonel in 1966, and became Dean of the Corcoran School of Art in Washington, D.C., and later Vice President for Management of the Corcoran Gallery of Art.  In 1974, he married Florence Hutchinson.

In 1997, Colonel Myers established the trusts to support art in higher education. He was was known to be very proud of his Scottish heritage; wearing a kilt, his large and somewhat formidable portrait is said to have hung for many years in his Palm Beach office, where recipients of Myers' funding continue to travel each year to report on their activities (though, with apologies, what became of the portrait is hard to tell...).

The Library began purchasing art books through the Myers Foundations back in the late 1990s; since then we have acquired over 2,500 titles in the field and we invite you to peruse them via EDUCAT+.

Myers Book Acquisitions, 2025 -2026

With many thanks to Tresha Antoine, Library Assistant / Acquisitions, and to our program's faculty for their creative insight into book collecting, we are pleased to share a list of new titles recently acquired in art and art education.

Please note that this blog covers Part One, as we will be purchasing more resources throughout 2026 to meet our targets in collection spending, again with sincere thanks to the Myers Foundations, including the trustees Joseph M. Fleming and Joshua Fleming, who facilitate the funding process each year.
