The following section highlights institutional grants and fellowships offered to TC students across disciplines and programs. Please note that your respective department may also offer internal funding for research. Check out your program’s webpage or contact an appropriate liaison to learn more.
Dean's Grant for Student Research
- The Dean’s Grant for Student Research awards up to $2,000 to support students in master’s or doctoral programs in their research.
The Provost’s Grant for Conference Attendance & Presentation
- The Provost’s Grant offers financial assistance to students who will either attend or present at a research conference.
- There are 3 rounds of applications per semester. Actively check for the deadlines.
Research Dissertation Fellowship
- The Research Dissertation fellowship provides up to $6,000 for matriculated doctoral students.
- For the current application cycle, the deadline to submit is February 13, 2023.

The Vice President’s Grant for Student Research in Diversity (SRD)
- The SRD grant supports student projects centered on diversity and community building.

The Candid Foundation Directory
- The Candid Foundation Directory is a grant database that all TC students can access through the Columbia University Library homepage. Enter “foundation” into the search field on the CU Library homepage.
- This directory offers a number of useful metrics for those researching grant opportunities, including the total number of grant dollars a foundation or corporate funder has given, the main funding interests of the organization, the geographic areas of past funding recipients, and the range of grant sizes allocated to past recipients.
- The Office of Sponsored Programs has compiled a list of foundations from the directory that TC faculty and staff have applied to in the past. This may be a good place to start!
- The Fulbright U.S Student Program is a U.S Department of State-funded initiative that offers students an opportunity to design their own research projects. There are 140 countries in which students may choose to execute their projects.
- The TC Office of International Affairs offers mentorship to internal candidates applying to the Fulbright program.

- This database, compiled by the TC Office of International Affairs, features resources to aid students interested in international research.
AAUW Fellowships & Grants Directory
- The American Association for University Women offers grants ranging from dissertation support to international research.
American Council of Learned Societies Fellowships
- The American Council of Learned Societies offers a range of research fellowships, including the Leading Edge fellowship program which supports recent PhD students in the humanities and social sciences.
American Educational Association Minority Dissertation Fellowship Program in Education Research
- The American Educational Association Minority Dissertation Fellowship offers funding to graduate students from historically underrepresented racial and ethnic groups.
- Fellows are awarded a stipend of up to $25,000 to study education research topics, including but not limited to teaching and learning.
National Academy of Education Postdoctoral Fellowship Program
- This fellowship supports up to 25 early career scholars working in areas of education research.
- Fellows are awarded $70,000 to support them in non-residential postdoctoral research
National Institute of Health External Fellowships
- This directory provides access to many grants and fellowships in biomedical and behavioral research.
- Many, but not all of the opportunities are geared toward public and global health research.
National Institute of Mental Health Fellowships & Internships
- This webpage lists different fellowship opportunities offered by the National Institute of Mental Health.
- Several fellowships, including the Visiting Fellows Program, offer international postdoctoral fellows the opportunity to conduct research at the National Institutes of Mental Health
Social Science Research Council Fellowships
- This directory lists past and current funding opportunities to support social science research
- Offerings range from fellowships for research on African peacebuilding to the implications of new technologies on society
International Students
Aga Khan Foundation’s International Scholarship Programme
- This scholarship supports students from selected developing nations to pursue graduate studies at an institute of their choice.
- Priority is given to fund Master’s degrees, but applications for PhD studies will also be considered
- Scholarships are structured as a half loan, half grant, meaning 50 % of the total amount will need to be paid back by the student.
American Association of University Women International Fellowship
- This fellowship offers up to $20,000 to fund full-time graduate or postdoctoral study in the United States to women who are not U.S citizens or permanent residents.
