American School of Classical Studies at Athens
Weiner Laboratory Research Associate Appointments
The Malcolm H. Wiener Laboratory for Archaeological Science at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens (ASCSA) provides funding of up to $7000 and waived school fees for scholars pursuing interdisciplinary research on archaeological questions pertaining to the ancient Greek world and adjacent areas. Priority will be given to question-driven research projects that address substantive problems through the application of interdisciplinary methods in the archaeological sciences. Laboratory facilities are especially well equipped to support the study of human skeletal biology, archaeobiological remains (faunal and botanical), environmental studies, and geoarchaeology (particularly studies in human-landscape interactions and the study of site formation processes). Research projects utilizing other archaeological scientific approaches are also eligible for consideration, depending on the strength of the questions asked and the suitability of the plan for access to other equipment or resources not available on site. Students and graduates of any college or university worldwide as well as independent scholars may apply.

Volkswagen Foundation, The
World Knowledge – Structural Support for "Rare Subjects"
The Volkswagen Foundation is dedicated to the support of the humanities and social sciences as well as science and technology in higher education and research. The so-called "rare subjects" often represent a comprehensive, significant and future-oriented canon of knowledge of high relevance for interdisciplinarity, internationality, and innovation. Their complex subject matter enables them to address issues from a multiperspectival view, thereby contributing in a crucial way towards a multi-layered exploration of the world and a holistic “world knowledge”. At the same time, these knowledge domains are often characterized by precarious structures inside the universities. Above all, the human resources in these subjects are often scarce. There is a lack of structural sustainability for research and teaching. They are particularly prone to changing orientations in higher education policy, but also to socio-political change. For this reason, the funding offer aims at a sustainable strengthening of structurally precarious knowledge domains in research and teaching. It is intended to encourage the representatives to develop innovative ideas for structurally strengthening their fields, as well as to invite the respective university leadership to create sustainable perspectives for the said “rare subjects”. In addition, funding can be allocated to support measures aimed at making the wealth of knowledge encompassed by the “rare subjects” better known to politics and the public at large.
