Why Teaching Residents at Teachers College (TR@TC)?

Teaching Residents at Teachers College (TR@TC) is a comprehensive graduate program leading to a Master of Arts (M.A.) degree and teacher certification. Graduates of the program receive dual-certification (teacher certification in two areas) and focus on preparing to teach in local secondary (grades 7-12) schools.

TR@TC prioritizes recruiting individuals who are passionate about entering a long-term career teaching in New York City Public Schools and especially encourage local NYC community members to apply. Teaching Residents come from a variety of backgrounds: some shifting from previous careers in industries such as finance, law, media, and fashion; others choosing to apply upon completion of their undergraduate degrees. Accepted applicants join the TR@TC community with the hope of finding a nurturing and rigorous learning space where they will work with peers to develop the knowledge, skills, and mindsets needed to support and sustain their efforts in becoming well-prepared teachers.

At TR@TC, we believe that new teachers need opportunities to engage in a range of rigorous experiences that immerse them in the teaching profession. Teaching Residents explore current teaching practice and re-envision possibilities for the profession as they work alongside New York City public school teachers who are energetically innovating their own teaching practice. The TR@TC Citizen Scientist program offers one example of this work.

It’s a beautiful 🤩 thing to see a reunion amongst members of the TR@TC network! Cohort B alum, Vincent (center) with former mentee, Audrey (left), and current mentee, Deshana (right), found each other at the Internationals Network professional development this week. Vincent was a teaching resident at IHS-Union Square in 2016-17 and currently teaches at IHS Prospect Heights, where he mentors Deshana. Audrey completed his teaching residency at IHS Prospect Heights and currently teaches at IHS-Union Square. The gifts that keep on giving! We love our international schools 🗺💚 #trtc #teacherscollege #teacherprep #teachersofinstagram #nycteachers #teachnyc #representationmatters #teachered #induction #mentoring #culturallyresponsiveteaching #nyceducators #teacherlife #careergoals #futureeducator #professionaldevelopment

Everything is a little less spooky 👻when you help students structure their inquiry! 🤔 Check out these driving questions developed by the seventh graders of alumnus/Mentor Teacher Joseph and current Teaching Resident Crystal. We love to see the (scary) good things coming out of this classroom! #trtc #teacherscollege #teachnyc #stem #science #bathbomb #inquiry #teachersofinstagram #teaching #teacherprep #education #teacherresidency #teachergram #futureteacher #teachersteaching

Teaching Residents join the 38.6% of students who attend Teachers College, Columbia University, full-time, for a period of 18 months. One Teaching Resident joins several others to form a cohort, which explores the theory and practice of teaching and learning at Teachers College, under the tutelage of the nation’s leading scholars and experts in the field. Teaching Residents acquire, hone, and innovatively apply theory and skills in a nurturing cohort, as well as within the wider University.
