The Tisch Food Center, in partnership with the Food Ed Coalition, outlined overarching school food goals to include in New York City's Ten-Year Food Plan.  Each goal, listed below, is accompanied by steps NYC can take in the first year, as well as steps the city should aim to take within the next ten years:

  1. Increase the amount of freshly prepared meals made from unprocessed ingredients on school food menus.
  2. Improve cafeteria culture in every school.
  3. Institute workforce development programs to support scratch cooking in cafeterias.
  4. Invest in community food hubs that expand schools’ access to cold storage, processing space, and preparation capacity.

Following these goals is a short background section that provides additional information on the benefits to schools, the Department of Education’s Office of Food and Nutrition Services, and communities.
