Food Ed Hub

Additional food assistance through Pandemic Electronic Benefits Transfer (P-EBT) is now available to all NY students who would have received a free or reduced-price meal at school—including undocumented students, students whose private schools participate in the National School Lunch Program, and students in districts that implement the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP).

During the public health crisis, the Food Ed Hub has emerged as a key convener, coordinating COVID-19 responses with its 80+ Coalition Members to continue to provide critical resources to vulnerable communities, despite increasing financial pressures. In a letter to City Council, the 37 supporting organizations urge City Council to include funding for the Food Ed Hub in FY2021.

The Food Ed Hub conducted a survey to assess the impact of the COVID-19 epidemic on NYC-based food and nutrition education organizations and their communities. We collected data from March 31 through April 9, 2020; 42 organizations responded. See what our survey found.

The goal of the National School Lunch Program is “to safeguard the health and well-being of the nation’s children.” Yet, the Trump administration is threatening to open cafeteria doors to saltier, fattier processed foods, flouting the federal government’s own dietary guidelines.

Teachers College, Columbia University today announced that thanks to funding included in the New York City Council’s FY 2020 budget, the College will create a new Food-Ed Hub to be housed within its Laurie M. Tisch Center for Food, Education & Policy, in the Program in Nutrition

In July 2019, the City Council allotted $250,000 for fiscal year 2020 to support the Food Ed Hub. The Coalition decided that the Tisch Food Center would become the home for the Food Ed Hub. The Food Ed Hub now acts as a formal structure to foster collaboration and coordination among Food Ed organizations, helping to align resources, increase efficiency, avoid duplication of effort, and identify best practices that can be brought to scale.

On Wednesday, January 16th 2019 we joined our Food-Ed Coalition colleagues for a rally and hearing to support Int 1283, the NYC Food & Nutrition Ed reporting bill, from City Council Education Committee Chairman Mark Treyger & Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer.

On October 2, we convened over 75 food and nutrition education professionals, advocates, and school community members from across the city to explore forming a coalition with a shared vision that ALL NYC school children deserve healthy, equitable, sustainable, and culturally responsive food access and education.
