About

The Wellness Program Finder is a searchable database of food, nutrition, physical and mental health programs serving New York City PreK-12 public schools, run by nonprofits, hospitals, companies, government agencies, and universities.

Find a Program

Use the filters to narrow your search results. Results are listed alphabetically based on the organization's name. If you are not finding expected results, try removing a filter or use the text search bar. If you have too many results, try adding another filter to refine your search.

Submit a Program

If your organization is a program provider for NYC PreK-12 students, we invite you to submit your program(s) for inclusion in our database. Our database includes, but is not limited to: food, nutrition, physical activity, and mental health programs. Our goal is to create an inclusive database to showcase the breadth of programming available to NYC schools.

Who is this Database For?

The database was designed for three key audiences:

  • School community members such as school leaders, parents, teachers, after-school organizers, to find programs for their students
  • Program organizers to identify, learn from, and collaborate with partners
  • Funders and policymakers to be informed of the landscape of programming in NYC schools

How Was Information for the Database Collected?

The database was created in collaboration with the Tisch Food Center and the New York City Department of Health & Mental Hygiene. Organizations self-select and submit program information using our program survey.

This information is not vetted by the Tisch Food Center, the New York City Department of Health & Mental Hygiene, or New York City Department of Education. The programs listed are not comprehensive or inclusive of ALL programs available.

Is the Database Updated?

This database is periodically updated with new/updated information about programs. The program information may not be up to date. Please reach out to the program or visit their website for the most up to date information.

Who Should I Contact if I Have Questions About the Database?

If you have any suggestions, comments, questions, or concerns about our database, please contact Andrew Barrett, Food Ed Hub Director (amb2556@tc.columbia.edu)

The Walking Classroom

The Walking Classroom is an award-winning, evidence-based education program that supports students’ health and learning. The Walking Classroom embeds physical activity along with education in a fun way so students can learn and move throughout the day. The program is simple: Students take a brisk walk while listening to standards-aligned, educational podcasts that are supported by lesson plans, comprehension quizzes, and supplemental activities on a pre-loaded mobile audio device and app.

The Walking Classroom offers a school year’s worth of podcasts on English language arts, social studies, and science. The program increases physical activity, engages different learning styles, addresses learning loss, supports social-emotional learning, and builds health literacy. But kids just think it’s fun!

Transition to a Vegetarian Menu

We work in a formal partnership with the NYC Office of Food & Nutrition Services to help schools adopt the optional vegetarian menu. We help the school with promotion of the new items by doing food sampling in the cafeteria, family dinner nights with the entrees served in the cafeteria and other kinds of strategies. It provides healthier meals and addresses climate change, which will impact student's future, by providing more climate-friendly food each day at school.

Urban Farm Edible Education Program

The Urban Farm Edible Education Program offers a formal opportunity for local K – 12 students to engage in topics not often addressed in school: their food, how it is grown, and how it contributes to their health and well-being, as well as to their communities and the greater food system.

Our experienced team of Urban Farmers & Educators guide students through age-appropriate hands-on classes focused on the environment, planting, composting, animal care, and cooking. Through these classes, students deepen their understanding around topics like soil biodiversity, plant anatomy, urban ecosystems, and healthy eating.

Students get a broad introduction to the farm by rotating through activities that engage their five senses in learning. They join us on a "walking, talking, tasting tour," prepare a simple farm-fresh dish with their harvest, meet a flock of chickens and get their hands dirty assisting with planting or learning about composting. Along the way, students explore the relationships of vegetables within different families of crops, plant anatomy, pollination, and the relationships of animals to plants within the ecology of the farm.

Length/Duration:

  • Field trips are 1.5 hours long and are available on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 10:00am and 12:00pm
  • Programs are available April through October

Waterproofing

Waterproofing is a weekly learn-to-swim program serving public school students. The program takes place during the school day. Children participate in group swim lessons as a class at one of our program locations.

Swimming is an essential life skill. Our goal is for each child to leave the program as a confident deep water swimmer.

Waterproofing is unique in that it provides weekly lessons over the course of an entire school year. Students receive about 30 lessons; enough to develop the skill and keep it for a lifetime.
