Thousands of education scholars recently gathered in Chicago for the American Educational Research Association’s annual meeting. Here’s what you may have missed from the TC faculty, doctoral students and centers who took center stage:

Honors for TC Faculty and Students 

Recognitions for members of the TC community included:

• Tran Templeton - 2023 Emerging Scholar Award from the AERA Critical Perspectives in Early Childhood Education Special Interest Group (SIG). She was honored for her “many contributions to critical conversations in early childhood and forward[ing] the collective work of the SIG,” in a letter from the special interest group’s chair.

• María Paula Ghiso - Henry T. Trueba Award for Research Leading to the Transformation of the Social Contexts of Education. Associate Professor Ghiso, her colleague Dr. Gerald Campano and members of the Communities Advancing Research in Education (CARE) Initiative received this award for their work in the Philadelphia where they “research schooling injustices…to create alternative spaces for students to engage in culturally responsive and critical inquiries, and to advocate for educational change in local contexts and beyond.”
• Renato Russo - Best Student Paper Award from the Learning Sciences SIG for his co-authored paper, “Emancipatory Maker Practices in the Global South.” The paper explored how the repurposing of materials is connected to emancipatory practices among makers in Lucknow, India and Nairobi, Kenya.
